How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. If you're having issues with this component, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, read more whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

3. Fuel Pump
