How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu has to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. 2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When i crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID audi tt keys but without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 click here if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles.
